Results

  • Yellowstone

You want a place that feels alive. Between erupting geysers, rainbow hot springs and bison herds that stop traffic, every turn of the road is a nature documentary, and you will be the one spotting wildlife first. Try: Time your visit to Old Faithful, then walk the boardwalks at Grand Prismatic Spring. Pack: Binoculars and layers, since summer mornings can still be chilly.

  • Yosemite

You are drawn to big, bold landscapes. Sheer granite walls, giant sequoias and waterfalls you can hear before you see them are calling your name, and spring is when they put on their loudest show. Try: The Mist Trail to Vernal Fall (you will get soaked, in the best way). Pack: A rain jacket for the spray and sturdy shoes for wet granite steps.

  • Grand Canyon

You love a view that leaves you speechless. Watch the canyon change color at sunrise, walk the rim and feel almost two billion years of rock layers stretched out below you. Pictures never do it justice, which is exactly why you need to go. Try: Sunrise at Mather Point, then a short hike below the rim. Pack: More water than you think you need and a warm layer for the rim.

  • Acadia

You like your adventures with an ocean view. Rocky shorelines, harbor towns, blueberry everything and a sunrise from a granite summit make this your perfect escape. It is wild enough to feel remote and cozy enough for lobster rolls every night. Try: Sunrise from Cadillac Mountain, then bike the old carriage roads. Pack: A windbreaker and a fleece, even in summer.

  • Zion

You are here for the challenge and the payoff. Towering red cliffs, river hikes through narrow canyons and summit views make every step worth it, and you are the friend who always says "one more mile." Try: Wade up The Narrows, and enter the permit lottery for Angels Landing early. Pack: Water shoes or rented canyon boots and a hat for the desert sun.

  • Glacier

You crave true wilderness. Turquoise lakes, wildflower meadows, mountain goats and one of the most dramatic mountain roads in the country are waiting for you, and the crowds thin out the higher you hike. Try: Drive Going-to-the-Sun Road in midsummer, then hike in Many Glacier. Pack: Bear spray, a warm hat and a camera with a full battery.
